01

Purposeful Relationships and Individual Well-Being

The focus of this Purposeful Pillar is the well-being and thriving of both individuals and families and incorporates a lens of theory and applied sciences to our work with clients.

Family Dynamics, Systems Theory, and Relationships

Effectively serving client families involves understanding and navigating the complex interactions, group dynamics, and systems present when clients gather together. Content in this area spotlights theory, framework, and practices from the sciences that foster healthy communication, conflict resolution, effective boundaries, and resilience within groups, including families,  to promote thriving and dynamic relationships.

Families’ narratives, traditions, and shared experiences serve to share their identity and fuel their work together. Often, in this work of formalizing, structuring, etc, we can lose track of the fabric that has held the family together. This content area intentionally attempts to help identify, acknowledge, and preserve family narratives and traditions that nurture individual well-being and strengthen familial connections.

Some of the most foundational components of our work include supporting the growth, learning, and transitions individuals experience from infancy through old age, and nurturing personal growth and resilience at these various life stages to foster overall well-being within the family unit and beyond. This area encompasses psychophysiological, psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social development and recognizes the influence of familial relationships and broader social contexts on individual well-being, as well as the impact of individual well-being on all personal and professional relationships and endeavors.

02

Purposeful Family Enterprise Techniques & Structures

This Purposeful Pillar encompasses the areas of technical planning in our work. Each of these areas highlights frameworks, strategies, and best practices across various technical disciplines with a holistic perspective on outcomes across generations and across all capital areas.

Family Business

Family businesses have predictable patterns of evolution throughout their lifecycle. It is incumbent on advisors to understand the organizational impact of a family enterprise not just on the family but also on the non-family employees, shareholders, and community to which it has contributed. These complexities become more nuanced as businesses expand from their entrepreneurial beginnings to involve multiple branches or generations; they are faced with the opportunity to transcend mere profitability and address broader complexities that include family goals and perspectives. This content area spotlights family business consultants and advisors sharing best practices and insights to support family-held enterprises.

Family office is the approach complex enterprising families take to manage their entrepreneurial legacy. There, single—and multi-family offices manage the affairs of complex, ultra-high-net-worth families, who face unique challenges and opportunities both structurally and legacy-related. Each family office has a different structure, purpose, and timeline horizon which is important to consider in succession for these entities which is an inherently complex endeavor. This content area features innovative approaches for those supporting client families in family office settings.

Governance encompasses the manner in which decisions are made and communication is handled in family enterprises. While there is a spectrum from informal self-governance to more structured governance, every family enterprise has its own form of governance. Effective governance fits the families’ size, scale, complexity, and capacity. It is agile enough to adapt to the family and when implemented adeptly, allows families to achieve enterprise goals while preserving family values, cohesion, and continuity. This content area highlights approaches to evaluate, establish, maintain, and modify structured frameworks and strategies for decision-making, communication, and transition readiness across generations in enterprising families.

Structures in a family enterprise can be an enhancement or an impediment to relationships, communication, and trust. It’s vital for advisors on both the technical and non-technical sides of work with client families to understand key elements of estate planning, especially in a landscape of changing laws and innovative approaches.  This content area addresses best practices at the intersection of wealth preservation, sound technical planning, and the well-being and overall thriving of individuals and relationships.

Financial health and well-being are a complex challenge for families who own enterprises as there is, often, the perception that they understand financial planning, investing, and theory. These are complex subjects that have their discipline as well as emotional components for individuals. Content in this category area highlights practical approaches for advisors to engage with their clients around their wealth for planning in their own lives as well as for their spouses and heirs, which will deepen purposeful client relationships and inspire clients to thrive personally and together across generations.
