The new report from the National Center for Family Philanthropy and Arabella Advisors summarizes findings from over 75 interviews with philanthropic families and leverages principles from psychology and behavioral economics to offer practical advice to families and their advisors. Together we will explore highlights including shifting mindsets from spending to investing, overcoming complexity to embrace urgency and embracing trust for greater impact. The session will highlight the timely nature of this research as families unlock greater dollars for urgent issues including preserving climate, democracy and social justice.

Introduction to our Guest Speaker(s)

Betsy Erickson leads Arabella’s work with family and individual clients, supporting them to further their learning, collaboration, and philanthropic goals. During her 14 years at Arabella, Betsy has helped dozens of clients design and launch strategies and run grantmaking programs on issues ranging from conservation to experiential education. Betsy draws on her study and practical experience in systems and family dynamics to facilitate groups to make decisions and work together effectively. Applying her expertise in enabling learning and collaboration, Betsy has significant experience working with multi-generational families.

Prior to joining Arabella, Betsy worked for eight years in the nonprofit sector with groups focused on cancer research. She provided independent consulting services to national and regional nonprofit organizations such as CureSearch National Childhood CancerFoundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. She helped these organizations develop corporate partnerships, garner support from family foundations and major donors, and establish and grow their workplace giving campaigns.

Betsy has a BA from Colgate University, where she graduated with honors in two programs: philosophy and religion, and art and art history. Betsy also completed a certificate program in human behavior and public policy at Harvard Kennedy School and a three-year postgraduate program at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family at Georgetown Family Center. Betsy is the faculty chair for the Social Impact and Philanthropy domain at the UHNW Institute and is a leader in the Institute’s DEI work. Betsy is also a member of the Purposeful Planning Institute, co-leading its family dynamics working group. Betsy resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her spouse and two daughters.

 

Molly Lyons is the senior director of communications at the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) where she leads the marketing and communications team in providing members and the field with clear and compelling information that helps them more effectively create the impact they seek. 

An experienced content creator and strategist, Molly has spent more than 25 years helping others tell their stories to the audiences they most want to reach. Previous to NCFP, she helmed the creative and editorial services team at Arabella Advisors. There, she led a team of editors and designers to support client service teams as they produced actionable deliverables and winning proposals for more than 400 institutional and family philanthropy client engagements a year, which influenced billions in philanthropic assets annually. In particular, she was embedded in the firm’s individual and family practice, helping to shape giving strategies and develop materials such as annual reports, grantee profiles, donor intent letters, and policy statements that helped clients effectively connect to their family members, partners, and peers. She also produced materials that helped grow and advance the field on topics such as fiscal sponsorship, impact investing, and more. Molly was a trusted strategic communications advisor to executives, leaders, and others across the firm, crafting and implementing internal communications strategies that supported organizational growth and allowed teams to share information effectively and equitably.  

Before joining the social sector, Molly held various positions in the publishing field. She has edited for and has overseen special projects at Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, Time Inc., Meredith, Hachette Filipacchi, and Gannett properties. Her writing has appeared in multiple national publications, including USA Today. She was a founding editor of Lifetime Magazine, a joint venture of Hearst and Lifetime Television. She’s also ghostwritten books and book proposals. As a literary agent, she’s worked with authors to conceptualize and sell fiction and non-fiction projects. Her client list includes two New York Times bestselling authors. 

Molly has served on the board of the Women’s Media Group and is a graduate of Amherst College.
