The past 20 years have seen a growing interest among estate planning clients in addressing issues that go beyond pure technical planning. There has been a corresponding expansion of services by offered by CFPs, wealth management and trust companies, and family dynamics consultants to meet this interest. The growth of PPI since 2010 is evidence of this phenomena. Yet the estate planning legal practice does not appear to be keeping pace with the development of interest we see in other professional disciplines. Are there opportunities for estate planning attorneys to broaden their practice offerings to match other professional disciplines in serving families in this domain? How might non- lawyer PPI members collaborate with and encourage their client’s attorney to learn about and embrace purposeful planning?

The 4 attorneys participating in today’s program offer ideas on how to offer these services in a financially viable manner.

Introduction to our Guest Speaker(s)

David Claflin is an estate planning attorney focused on creating and implementing wealth management and transfer plans tailored to reflect the client’s unique family values and relationships, in addition to the financial wealth. He is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and has practiced in this specialty area since the mid-1990s. David is a graduate of Austin College and the University of Houston College of Law. He joined PPI in 2016 and has managed the Austin PPI Collaboratory for the past several years.

Klea Harris loves helping families use estate planning to heal their relationships rather than perpetuate conflict. She believes in estate planning that is guided by love and governed by law.  With these principles in mind, she started Angel Advocates, PLLC in 2019 and enjoys leading a team of like-minded estate planning attorneys and consulting 500+ other attorneys so they can successfully implement purposeful element into their own practices.

She earned her bachelor’s in history and gerontology and law degree from Brigham Young University. In service to her clients, Klea draws from her experience as a wife of 26 years and mother of eight children, including three adopted from Haiti in 2003.  She loves mediation, watercolor, and hiking the National Parks with her family.

Craig Stone is the principal and president of Stone Law Offices, Ltd. He has been practicing in the State of Nevada since 1993 and provides legal counsel and services to affluent clients and families in the areas of wealth transfer and preservation strategies, including general estate planning, sophisticated tax planning (federal income and estate taxes), charitable planning and planned giving, business law, including business exit planning (aka business succession planning), and domestic and international asset protection planning.

Craig’s personal practice emphasizes a “values-based approach.” He views his role as more than just an attorney, but a wealth counselor and coach helping clients to fulfill their goals and dreams by applying his technical expertise and professional knowledge to design a sound estate plan and solve the issues and concerns that come with wealth. Craig is a firm believer in building the attorney-client relationship and not just providing an attorney-client transaction.

John A. Warnick Until late 2009 John A. Warnick was a partner in the Denver office of a large regional law firm where he chaired that firm’s Private Client Service Group. In early 2010 Mr. Warnick launched the Purposeful Planning Collaboration, a virtual community of estate planning attorneys, financial planners, CPAs, trustees, wealth psychologists and family business consultants who want to insure that the impact of their technical planning will be a positive force in the lives of each generation of their client families. His blog, Seedlings, provides suggestions on powerful but easy ways in which we can make non-financial gifts to our families, clients and communities, and his monthly newsletter showcases best practices for families of wealth and families in business. Mr. Warnick is a Best Lawyer in America and SuperLawyer. He serves on the Board of Directors of Advisors in Philanthropy and is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Mr. Warnick received a BA magna cum laude from Brigham Young University and his JD from George Washington University with honors.
