Dr. David Yeske, CFP® is known in the advisory world for his efforts to bring scientific rigor to the financial planning process.  In a recent industry article, he is quoted as saying “I think financial planning should be the artful application of the best available science.” Dave is also known as a thought-leader in developing and testing client-centered best-practices, an innovative and enthusiastic educator, and a tireless advocate for the betterment of the financial planning profession.

In this PPI interview with Dave, we’ll hear about his own “purposeful odyssey,” the marriage of art and science that shapes his own financial planning practice, and his many leadership roles within the financial planning community.  Lastly, we will learn about Dave’s role in academia, his dedication to preserving the legacy of PPI’s own Dick Wagner, and the development of a graduate-level curriculum in Financial Life Planning.

Introduction to Our Guests Speaker

Dr. David Yeske, CFP®, earned a doctorate in finance from Golden Gate University, as well as an M.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Applied Economics from the University of San Francisco. He has been practicing financial planning since 1990 and is currently the Managing Director of Yeske Buie with offices in San Francisco, CA and Vienna, VA.

Dave has written feature articles for Research Magazine, San Francisco Magazine, and The Journal of Retirement Planning. He co-authored the article “Policy-Based Financial Planning Provides Touchstone in a Turbulent World” with Elissa Buie, CFP®, which was published in July 2006 in The Journal of Financial PlanningThe Journal also published their most recent collaboration, “Evidence-Based Financial Planning: To Learn. . . Like a CFP®,” which appeared in the November 2011 issue.

The results of Dave’s doctoral research were published in The Journal of Financial Planning in September 2010 under the title “Finding the Planning in Financial Planning.”   In October 2017, Dave was awarded the prestigious P. Kemp Fain, Jr. Award, the Financial Planning profession’s lifetime achievement award. Dave’s contributions as a thought leader in the profession through his writing, presenting, and teaching and his dedication to mentoring future generations of planners through his longtime role as a mentor and Dean of FPA’s Residency program and his involvement at Golden Gate University spanning more than two decades were highlighted as he received the award.

Dave holds an appointment as Distinguished Adjunct Professor in Golden Gate University’s Ageno School of Business, where he is director of the University’s financial planning program.  Dave served as Chair of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) PAC in 2005 and 2006 and chaired FPA’s Research Center Team and its Academic Advisory Council from 2007 to 2012.  Dave also received FPA’s Heart of Financial Planning award in 2012.
