Serving Culturally-Diverse Families: A Series on World Cultures

Session #2: Collective Harmony

Emily Bouchard, Managing Partner, The Wealth Legacy Group
Mary K. Duke, Independent Advisor
Dennis T. Jaffe, Research Associate, Wise Counsel
Christian Stewart, Managing Director, Family Legacy Asia (HK) Limited & Associate at Wise Counsel Research

Date: January 30, 2018

Time: Noon ET (60 Minutes)

In the book Cross Cultures: How Global Families Negotiate Change Across Generations, PPI Fellows Dennis Jaffe and Jim Grubman present the latest cross-cultural research finding three core cultural traditions around the world.  These three traditions shape the mindset and practices of families and family businesses, including how people express emotions, communicate, trust, seek leadership, plan succession, and create expectations for family members.

There are three core cultural traditions around the world: Individualist culture (Western culture), Collective Harmony culture (East Asian culture) and Honor culture (various cultures prevalent in the Middle East, Southern and Eastern Europe, Latin America, India, and Russia). Each tradition has a unique set of traits that impact how an individual relates to others, solves problems within the family, and even how they perceive the role of the advisor.

Working with families of cultures different from our own creates challenges advisors need to navigate wisely. Please join us for an informative series during which PPI members with deep experience working with families from varying world cultures will help us become more aware of cultural differences and better equipped to serve culturally diverse families. Each call will include an overview of one world culture, case vignettes, best practices, and time for you to ask questions of the panel members.

In the January 30th session, we will focus on the Collective Harmony culture group.
